Choosing the Right Bathtub for a Home

Tubs come in numerous materials and even more shapes and sizes.

For some, a quick shower will never come close to a long, relaxing soak in a bathtub. However, tubs come in numerous materials and even more shapes and sizes, so picking the right fixture can be overwhelming.

Here’s what to consider when choosing a new bathtub for a home.

Size

A bathtub needs to be a comfortable size for the user. Not only that, but it must also not compromise the available space. Standard tubs are 60x30x14 inches in dimensions, but the configuration of the bathroom and the location of plumbing lines will play a role in the appropriate size bathtub for a space.

Type

Bathtubs don’t just differ in appearance but function as well. Different types provide different experiences and benefits, so the user’s lifestyle and needs may influence the choice. In addition, different types have different installation requirements, so their bathroom arrangement may limit homeowners’ options. Professionals can guide prospective buyers regarding the right bathtub for their space. Some types to consider are:

  • Alcove tubs

  • Freestanding tubs

  • Corner tubs

  • Oval tubs

  • Drop-in tubs

  • Platform tubs

  • Whirlpool tubs

  • Soaking tubs

Material

Material is one of the essential features of a bathtub. It will largely influence the tub’s price, weight, durability, and maintenance needs. Although bathtubs can be made from various materials, the most popular choices today are fiberglass, acrylic, porcelain, ceramic, and cast iron.

Fiberglass tubs have excellent insulating properties. In addition, they are affordable and lightweight, which unfortunately means they are thin and not very durable. Still, they are in wide usage since they come in countless shapes.

Acrylic tubs are a tad more expensive than fiberglass but are resistant to stains and retain heat well.

Porcelain tubs are made from enameled steel. They have a classic look and are relatively durable, but they’re also heavier than the previous types and have poorer insulating properties.

Ceramic tubs come in numerous iterations and at reasonable prices. However, they require more maintenance and are less comfortable to use.

Finally, cast iron tubs are extremely durable, retain heat well, and won’t chip scratch, or dent. They have an undeniably luxurious look. Naturally, this comes at a considerably higher price. Cast iron tubs are also much heavier, so they aren’t suited for all spaces.

Weight

It’s essential to factor in the tub’s weight when choosing materials. Some materials, like cast iron, are heavier. In addition, a large tub that holds over a hundred gallons of water can burden a home’s structure.

Price

Its style and the material used to make it determine the price of a bathtub. Quality tubs will always be more expensive, but they will maintain their clean appearance for longer. On the other hand, cheaper materials like fiberglass provide affordable choices for those with a tight budget.

Keep in mind that if the tub requires unique installation, the budget necessary for this project can increase.
