Mesa’s history can be traced to the arrival of the Hohokam people. They built the original canal system in the area, the most extensive such system before the discovery of America. By 1100 AD, the expansive canal network transformed the Sonoran desert into an oasis that could support agriculture. Hohokam people constructed hundreds of miles of canals, most of which are still used.

The history of Mesa is vague between the disappearance of the Hohokam people and the arrival of early American settlers. Initially, the settlement was called Fort Ural, then Jonesville, and finally Lehi. Around 1877, a group called First Mesa Company came to the area. They dug irrigation canals using some of the original Hohokam canals. The second company arrived in the area and settled a short distance away. Mesa City was registered in 1878 and incorporated in 1883.

The area is home to several attractions. Tour the Mesa Grande Ruins, the park designed to preserve the region's rich culture. The main features are adobe walls and platform ruins.

The Mesa Arts Center is the state's largest and hosts world-class exhibitions, while the Mesa Amphitheater is an outdoor venue that’s design is considered exceptional because it allows everyone to have a great view of the state. The venue hosts musical events throughout the year.
